United Churches in Guelph and other faith partners have come together to welcome a single man who is a Syrian citizen, born in Saudi Arabia but who has been in the United Arab Emirates. He is 31 years old, speaks English and Arabic, and has a degree and work experience in marketing and banking. He arrived in Guelph on August 12. A small group offering hands on, frequent support to the newcomer has been preparing for his arrival.
How you can help:
- We need volunteers for a bigger group that will help fundraise and fill requests for outings, transport, social and emotional support as they arise.
- Can you make a financial gift? We have funds to support most of our year long commitment, but we must raise an additional $5,000 to $7,000, perhaps more. If you have been blessed with the means to bless others, your support will help us respond to this sponsorship opportunity and future refugee needs. You can donate through your own congregation; please contact the people below for details.
- Do you know of an affordable studio or bachelor apartment for rent? Let Ruth Cooke know.
- We don’t need donations of furniture, clothing or household goods at this point, but we will let you know if that changes.

Please note: Refugees (as opposed to immigrants) must be approved as such before they receive sponsorship. The government then matches approved refugees with approved sponsors. This is not the same as immigration sponsorship. We are only able to assist with sponsor government approved refugees with whom we have been matched.
